Rumours are spreading around, regarding new anti friction alloys to be used as a babbit coating in new generation engines, given the banning to use of Lead as a component inside any kind of lubricated equipment, starting 2011.
The R & D departments of several car manufacturers are looking after new “weird” elements, to be installed, instead of traditional Tin/Lead, Copper journal bearings.
Some of them are relatively unknown to the generic technicians, but manufactures of such components are well aware of benefits and possible defects of such alloys.
We are speaking of Beryllium, Bismuth and Indium; very “down, to the right” in the elements’ periodic table. These relatively unusual elements are applied, as a very thin layer (very few microns) on top of Silver or Copper substrates, to make them more sturdy and galvanic adequate.
The potential of new generation Spectroils (with latest CCD technology an upgrade of standard optical configuration is easily achievable) to analyze these elements is definitely a plus, that not so many competitors can deal with.
We (at Mecoil, in Firenze) have been able to improve our demo Spectroil M/C unit, and recently started to “visualize” very low concentrations of Bismuth, in association with few ppm of Silver.
And these results helped very much to convince one of our most famous car manufacturer, and definitely the most attractive sport team in F-1 contests, to decide to switch from an old Dos instrument, to the new generation Q-100. The feed-backs from the visual inspections of some of the babbits/bushings, from testing facility, confirmed the accuracy of our diagnostics, trough oil analysis.
From now on many more new elements will be needed to achieve the actual perspective of  “what’s wrong is going on inside that engine?” and Spectroil Q-100 can give you the adequate answer.
