{"id":3278,"date":"2013-02-20T10:38:20","date_gmt":"2013-02-20T10:38:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mecoil.net\/?p=3278"},"modified":"2023-10-16T11:20:03","modified_gmt":"2023-10-16T09:20:03","slug":"prodotto-scadente-o-semplicemente-scaduto","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mecoil.net\/en\/2013\/02\/20\/is-the-product-of-poor-quality-or-simply-spoiled\/","title":{"rendered":"Is the product of poor quality or simply spoiled?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><b>Or, how and for how long to preserve lubricants in optimal conditions.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">Even if the majority of lubricants (grease or oils) that are usually utilized in the industry have a \u201cmineral\u201d origin, derived from fossil deposits from tens of millions of years ago, we need to remember that their \u201cuseful life\u201d (including storage periods) is still limited.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">Since the product as-is (the simple distilled or synthetized \u201cbase\u201d) is not always enough to satisfy the countless demands of the industry, which are made even more pressing by the progress of technology, we need to make use of complex sets of additives.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">As a result, we <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">get a mix<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"> of substances with a base (either synthetic or mineral) that needs to be blended uniformly with specific additives, which are developed in order to meet the more and more challenging conditions of use.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">This applies to liquid lubricants and, especially, greases, which are \u201ccongealed\u201d oils kept in a state of physical suspension, capable of retaining large percentages of product, released only when and where it is necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Kind of like a stabilized <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">mayonnaise<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">\u201d<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">, thanks to the right thickening products, that can protect mechanical components from chemical and physical agents even when the machine is not in motion. Capable of acting, like an oily sponge, as a buffer between \u201cloaded\u201d components during operating hours, and providing the necessary dynamic lubrication to the machine without fail.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">Therefore, where we once used to talk about \u201coil\u201d or \u201cgrease\u201d in general terms and managed these substances in a superficial way, nowadays we need to face plenty of diverse products, which have little in common despite performing the same primary task of lubrication.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><b>Evolution and specificity or the products.<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">We can identify at least four macro categories (with many subcategories that follow similar behavioral rules), which are:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">&#8211; Turbine oils<br \/>\n&#8211; Gear oils <br \/>\n&#8211; Engine oils<br \/>\n&#8211; Hydraulic oils<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">Among the aforementioned products, we need to pay close attention to engine oils; real alchemical mixtures in which the percentage of additives needed to achieve their specific performances is sometimes over 18% of the total weight.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">In this case, too, where it once was a deeply-rooted habit to use oils with fixed grades (following SAE regulations) such as \u201c40\u201d or \u201c30\u201d, eventually replacing the charge when the seasons changed, nowadays we use multi-grade products such as 10W\/40 in any climate.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">These products support a wide spectrum of uses, with very tolerant operating latitudes. But the mixing, as well as the storage, of these products, requires a higher level of attention in order to avoid the deterioration of these valuable qualities.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">When it comes to shelf life (usable storage time), turbine oils have an advantage. They generally start with a <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">very solid <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"> base and limited additive levels.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">Consequently, their storage time is less critical than the storage time of a gear lubricant with high levels of \u201cEP\u201d additives.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">But when it comes to turnover, we should not forget the issue of budget and related costs.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">With turbine oils (where volumes are way bigger) it wouldn\u2019t make sense to store huge quantities of product (unless it is a strategic step before an imminent replenishment), as the need to use it would be unlikely. This would also avoid related financial expenses.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">Let\u2019s not forget that these machines are usually the most monitored and typically subject to efficient conditions monitoring programs, which will include the most suitable proactive actions also applicable to lubrication. It\u2019s not realistic to imagine that the need to replace an entire oil fill of a turbine-generator unit raises \u201cin a few days\u201d, and on an urgent basis.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">On the other hand, keeping <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">in stock<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"> the right quantity of lubricant for transmissions or compressors (following the specifications of the manufacturer, and taking into account the physiological consumption of the products) is<\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">a valuable aid to the maintenance routine.<\/p>\n<p>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><b>What are the standard conditions for storing products?<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p align=\"justify\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-9716 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mecoil.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Stoccaggio-7-642x3002-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"479\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mecoil.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Stoccaggio-7-642x3002-1.png 642w, https:\/\/www.mecoil.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Stoccaggio-7-642x3002-1-300x140.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 479px) 100vw, 479px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"center\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">In this case, we need to differentiate structured storage rooms (indoor or even climate controlled) and emergency storage solutions, which unfortunately are routinely used, such as simple metal barrels exposed to the elements.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">One of the biggest problems in preserving the full properties of a lubricant (especially greases, for which we need to consider both the complexity of the additives and the stability of the thickeners) is temperature changes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">If we combine the natural variation of temperature (in our latitude, around 40\u00b0C) from Winter to Summer, to the direct insulation of drums and containers, we understand how that parameter is difficult to control.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">The quick variations of temperature trigger (especially in metal drums, whose internal surface is a catalyst itself) oxidation and deterioration <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">phenomena that<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"> keep going autonomously over time.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">Furthermore, the seal of the caps, even when tightly shut, will still let humidity seep in due to the \u201c<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">breathing<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">\/condensation\u201d <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">caused by<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"> the expansion and contraction of the containers. All of this happens <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">many<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"> times <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">throughout<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"> the year.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">About this matter, there are guidelines developed by <\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><i>super partes<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"> entities, or published by manufacturers, in which we find recommendations about shelf life of the main lubrication products. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">In their key text on lubrication, G. Willis and A.R. Landsdown give indications about the maximum storage time for the main lubrication products (see summary table below).<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-9717 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mecoil.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Tabella-scadenze-71.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"336\" height=\"369\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mecoil.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Tabella-scadenze-71.png 426w, https:\/\/www.mecoil.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Tabella-scadenze-71-154x169.png 154w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 336px) 100vw, 336px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><b>In summary<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">In Italy, where the management of assets in a Preventive\/Predictive perspective has had so far a low success, several gaps are popping up when we talk about lubricant charges preservation, including storage methods or stock criteria.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">It would be very interesting to conduct a survey within national users of the most popular products, in order to understand which instructions or procedures are in place on this subject. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">T<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">he empirical method is the most prevalent<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">,<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"> but if personal competence (<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"><i>per se<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"> very valuable) is not continuously updated, it quickly becomes obsolete. <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">G<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">enerating obvious risks for the management of the facilities: assessing the product <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">\u201cby eye\u201d (or more properly \u201cby touch\u201d) <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">is not enough to understand if it\u2019s still suitable to keep operating at its best.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">Consulting technical data sheets is at the basis of an expert lubrication technician\u2019s best practices.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">However (as with any other modern-use product whose expected performance is important), we also need to understand if the formulation we\u2019re using is still intact and suitable for the intended purpose, after many months if not years, of being left in an uncontrolled situation!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\" align=\"justify\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">In conclusion to our brief discussion on a much wider topic, we <\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">recommend consulting the<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\"> many articles on the subject available in the literature; in particular, a key work is Lubricant Storage Life Limits-Industry needs a standard.\u201d by Drew Troyer \u2013 Machinery Lubrication, Noria Corp.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif;\">Edited by G.
